Why Readiness Has to Come Before the Work, Not During It

By the UNIT8D Team

The Number

25 construction workers killed in 2025/26.
More deaths than any other industry.

HSE's provisional figures for Great Britain in 2025/26 record 126 workers killed at work — 25 of them in construction, the highest number of any industry. Falls from height remain the single biggest cause, accounting for 31 deaths across all industries. The figures are provisional until July 2027.

The Story

An illustrative scenario, not a real incident: it's 01:40 on a weekend possession. The team arrives, the briefing starts — and it turns out one operative's track safety card expired last month, the access point on the plan has been moved, and the supervisor covering tonight isn't qualified for the discipline being worked. None of it is anyone's fault on the night. All of it was knowable days earlier.

It's a familiar pattern behind many avoidable problems on site. Not bad people — unclosed gaps: a lapsed certification, a plan built on assumed access, cover arranged in a hurry. Every one of them visible before the shift. Every one of them harder to fix at 2am than at 2pm three days earlier.

Readiness Is a Discipline, Not a Checklist

That's what READY™, our operational readiness standard, is built to do — confirm people, planning, documentation, teams and controls before anyone reaches site. For people, that means identity, certification, competence and compliance all checked through ICCC™ — not self-declared, checked. For work packages, it means plans built on confirmed access, real constraints and qualified supervision.

Readiness checked before the gate.
Not discovered after it.

Why It Matters More As You Scale

A tight readiness process is easy when you're small and everyone knows everyone. It gets harder — and more important — as the workforce grows. That's why UNIT8D built its governance from day one rather than bolting it on after problems appeared.

The Question

What's the one readiness check you've seen skipped most often — and what did it cost? Send your view to info@unit8d.com with “iN-sites” in the subject. We’ll feature responses in future editions and keep the conversation going across our socials through the week.
