Stop-Work Authority

Anyone can stop unsafe work. No permission needed. No blame.

What It Means

Every person working with UNIT8D — our own people, agency workers, subcontractors and visitors — has the authority to stop work they believe is unsafe. They do not need to ask permission first, and they will never be penalised for a stop made in good faith.

If it doesn't feel safe, stop.
We'll back you.

How a Stop Works

  1. Stop — halt the activity and make the immediate area safe

  2. Tell — inform the supervisor or person in charge straight away

  3. Assess — the risk is reviewed with the people doing the work

  4. Resolve — controls are put right before anything restarts

  5. Restart — only when the concern is resolved and the person in charge confirms it is safe, with the person who stopped the job involved in that decision

  6. Learn — the stop is recorded and shared so it doesn't happen twice

Why It Matters

The people closest to the work see risk first. A culture where stopping is expected — not tolerated — is what turns near misses into lessons instead of incidents. Stop-work authority sits inside our Health, Safety, Wellbeing and Fitness for Work policy (POL-007), and concerns can also be raised confidentially through our Whistleblowing and Speak-Up policy (POL-003).
